Music in Memory: Country Gospel Funeral Songs

I have received several requests for the playlist of country gospel funeral songs from my mother’s services.

Music played an important role in my journey through my mother’s illness. It helped me maintain my connection to my mother while she was still alive and also helped me to say goodbye and honor her memory when she passed.

Music was one of the only gifts I could still give my mother in the final stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

In early December, after learning about music therapy for dementia patients on The Doctors television show, I purchased an inexpensive mp3 player and filled it with my mother’s favorite Christmas albums. The nurses immediately noticed a marked difference in her mood while she listened to her music.

Encouraged by her reaction, I added several of my mother’s favorite country albums to the mix.

The country gospel song list for my mother’s funeral was at least two years in the making, a collaboration of input from myself, my brother, my dad and my grandmother. Trust and Obey is the first song my mother ever memorized, according to her baby book.
