Five Favorite “Weekend Trip” Dates

I’m joining my For the Love launch team sisters again this week for our #FridayFive linkup, this time talking about our five favorite dates.

My neglected hubby

I’ll admit, I’ve kind of been neglecting the hubs lately. For the Love launch madness and mug swaps have taken over this month.

But next month, we’re taking a much needed extended weekend away (sans kiddos) in Boston. How awesome is that?

Fenway Park, here we come!

My five favorite “weekend trip” dates

So, in the spirit of weekends away for just the two of us, here are my five favorite “weekend trip” dates we’ve had as a married couple, from most recent to least recent:

Brenham & Burton, Texas

Last October, my dad treated us to two nights at a bed and breakfast near historic downtown Brenham.

We enjoyed Mexican food and margaritas at Los Cabos Mexican Grill, shopping on the square, drinks at BT Longhorn Steakhouse‘s gorgeous bar, pizza for lunch at Yumm! and a tasting at Pleasant Hill Winery in Brenham, as well as a tasting at Saddlehorn Winery and an Oktoberfest celebration, complete with wiener dog races and German beer at the historic Knittel’s General Store, in tiny, nearby Burton.

(Unfortunately, I was off dairy so we skipped Blue Bell Creameries, which, hallelujah, will begin distributing its beloved homemade ice cream again in central and southeastern Texas on August 31!)

Denver & Crested Butte, Colorado

In August 2013, the month after my mom passed, we had a “babymoon” in Colorado, when I was 6 months pregnant with Baby Girl #2.  We spent two nights in Denver and two nights in Crested Butte with my aunt and her family at their beautiful home in the mountains.

Crested Butte is a magical oasis in the wilderness.

We had lunch at The Last Steep and a steak dinner at Maxwell’s, climbed beautiful Mount Crested Butte (well, I climbed halfway up and then hung out with the chipmunks while he continued on) after eating breakfast tacos at Izzy’s, had drinks at Montanya Distillers (a mocktail for me and rum tasting for him) and a delicious sushi dinner at Lil’s, enjoyed music (and a beer for him) at The Eldo Brewery & Taproom and live folk music (and hot tea for me, plus I ended up sharing a piece of chocolate cake with fellow Aggies we had just met) at The Princess Wine Bar.

We finished out our weekend in CB Sunday morning by enjoying McGill’s famous french toast and perusing the Crested Butte Farmers Market.

Marble Falls & Tow, Texas

In October 2012, we had our first weekend away from our oldest daughter in Marble Falls.

Highlights of that trip include witnessing a goat birth at Sweet Berry Farm (yes, I’m serious), lunch and beers at Double Horn Brewing Company and dinner overlooking the lake at River City Grille in Marble Falls, and a private wine tasting with the owners of Fall Creek Vineyards, Ed and Susan Auler, in nearby Tow.

Fort Worth, Texas

In December 2010, we celebrated our anniversary a little early with a weekend in Fort Worth.

We explored the historic Fort Worth Stockyards and attended a Randy Rogers Band concert at Billy Bob’s Texas, visited the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Kimbell Art MuseumNational Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame and “150 Years of Fort Worth” at Fire Station No. 1 and also had yummy dinner and drinks at the famous Reata.

(The miniature museum in the historic fire station was actually my favorite part.)

Fredericksburg & Stonewall, Texas

In January 2009, we celebrated our first anniversary by staying at a bed and breakfast in Stonewall, near quaint Fredericksburg, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country.

We enjoyed wine tastings at Becker Vineyards, Grape Creek Vineyards and Torre di Pietra in Stonewall, as well as a beer tasting at Fredericksburg Brewing Company and a German dinner at The Auslander in downtown Fredericksburg.

More details about that trip are in my BlogHer post, A Little Taste of Texas Wine Country.
