Painting the fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23 is one of my favorite Bible verses, so I was thrilled when it was my preschool age daughter’s Sunday School memory verse for July:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

A few months ago, I started reading the cute book Pups of the Spirit by Deborah Melmon at bedtime with my 1 and 3-year-old daughters. It is fun, engaging and perfect for toddlers and preschoolers because it uses a different adorable dog to represent each gifting of the Holy Spirit.

In an effort to reinforce both her love of painting and her retention of her memory verse last month, I quickly sketched nine types of fruit, of my three-year-old daughter’s choosing, on a sketch pad, then let her paint each fruit with watercolors, and finally, I labeled each colorful fruit with a different fruit of the Spirit, also, of her choosing.

In case you don’t want to spend time drawing your own fruit shapes for your preschooler to paint or color, I’ve created this free 8.5″ x 11″ Fruit of the Spirit printable.

(And, if you’re wondering why some of the fruits are a little lopsided, I told my husband that they’re not perfect because they’re non-GMO. Ha!)

We used watercolors but you could obviously use any medium with your little one–markers, crayons, colored pencils, even finger paint. The important thing is to let your kids have fun and give them ownership of the project by letting them choose the colors for their fruit, the order they paint their fruit, etc., and talking about each fruit of the Spirit throughout the process.

We hope you enjoy this simple and easy art project as much as we did!
